Off Grid Solar Power Systems

For applications where utility lines (CEB or LECO) are not available, not desired, or just too expensive to bring in, Goodmonds Engineering can design and install a system to suit your needs. Off-grid systems present a wide array of possibilities depending on your site, your needs, and your budget.  We can design off-grid solar systems for remote cabins, telecommunications applications, remote business applications, and fully automated high end residential sites.

What is Off Grid?

A solar Off Grid system, also known as photovoltaic, or “PV”, uses roof-mounted or building integrated solar panels to collect energy from the sun and convert it into usable electricity. The term off-grid refers to not being connected to a grid, mainly used in terms of not being connected to the main or national transmission grid in electricity. In electricity off-grid can be standalone systems (SHS) or mini-grids typically to provide a smaller community with electricity. Off-grid electrification is an approach to access electricity used in countries and areas with little access to electricity, due to scattered or distant population. It can be any kind of electricity generation

2 Charge controller

Since the brighter the sunlight, the more voltage the solar cells produce, the excessive voltage could damage the batteries. A charge controller is used to maintain the proper charging voltage on the batteries. As the input voltage from the solar array rises, the charge controller regulates the charge to the batteries preventing any overcharging.

3 Inverter

A power inverter, or inverter, is an electrical device that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC)  the converted AC can be at any required voltage and frequency with the use of appropriate transformers, switching, and control circuits.
Solid-state inverters have no moving parts and are used in a wide range of applications, from small switching power supplies in computers, to large electric utility high-voltage direct current applications that transport bulk power. Inverters are commonly used to supply AC power from DC sources such as solar panels or batteries.

4 Battery Bank A battery bank is a group of batteries that are wired together. In an off-grid situation this is absolutely essential if you want to have access to electricity at times when there’s no sunlight available, such as during cloudy weather or during the night.
